Principal’s Bio

Dr. Susan Mumm was appointed as Principal on July 1, 2016.Dr. Susan Mumm

Dr. Mumm’s international academic career has spanned more than 20 years. She began as an Assistant Professor at York University, before joining The Open University in England where, during her ten-year tenure, she moved from lecturer to head of department, beginning her career as a talented academic administrator. Dr. Mumm served as Dean of Arts and Science at Mount Saint Vincent University, Halifax from 2006 – 2009, and Pro Vice-Chancellor, College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Massey University, New Zealand from 2009 – 2013. Prior to assuming the Principal role at Brescia, Dr. Mumm held the positions of Dean of Arts and Science and Professor of History at Queen’s University.

Dr. Mumm was raised on a sheep farm in Saskatchewan and studied British history at the University of Saskatchewan and the University of Sussex, England, where she was a Commonwealth Scholar. She is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and has published three books and numerous articles in her area of research. She is currently working on a fourth book on the history of organizations for young working women in 19th century Britain.

Chancellor’s Bio

The Board of Trustees at Brescia University College has appointed the Chancellor Gillese Official Photo 2015Honourable Madam Justice Eileen Gillese of the Ontario Court of Appeal as Brescia’s next Chancellor in June 2015.

Justice Gillese has become one of Canada’s most distinguished female leaders and has been a trailblazer throughout her career. Justice Gillese earned a prestigious Rhodes Scholarship to study at Oxford University in England the first year that Scholarship was opened to women. Justice Gillese has been the only female Dean of the Faculty of Law at Western University (1996 – 1999) and in 1998 was appointed as the inaugural Chair of the Financial Services Commission of Ontario and the Financial Services Tribunal. Justice Gillese is also a former Chair of the Pension Commission of Ontario.

Justice Gillese was appointed to the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in 1999 and in 2002 became a judge of the Ontario Court of Appeal. In 2009, Justice Gillese was awarded the inaugural OBA Award for Excellence in Pension and Benefits Law. She was named one of Canada’s Top 100 Women in 2006, and jointly, as a Globe and Mail Nation Builder in 2003. She was named a Leading Educator of the World in 2008 and awarded an honorary LLD from the Law Society of Upper Canada in 2001. In 1997 Justice Gillese was named 1 of “20 Most Influential Canadians in the Pension Field.” She has received a number of teaching awards, including the Edward Pleva Award for Excellence in Teaching from The University of Western Ontario and the inaugural National 3M Fellowship for Excellence in Teaching. She is widely published in the trusts and pension fields and continues to lecture at judicial and academic conferences.

Along with her many accomplishments, Justice Gillese has been able to successfully balance her professional and personal life. She and her husband, Robert Badun, have raised four children in London, and most recently, Toronto, and recognize the importance of maintaining a happy work–life balance.

The role of Chancellor at Brescia is an honorary one, presiding over Brescia’s annual Baccalaureate & Magisterial Exercises, serving as an honorary Trustee of the Brescia University College Board of Trustees and attending key institutional events. Justice Gillese will not, however, participate in fundraising on behalf of the University.

Justice Gillese notes the alignment of her own values and those of the institution that she will now serve.

“There are few things as important in our global society at the moment than educating girls and women. It is an honour to hold this important role at Canada’s women’s university – an institution that has been committed for almost 100 years to this critical mission. I look forward to the opportunities that this role will bring, and in particular, to spending time with tomorrow’s leaders, Brescia’s students and alumnae.”

Dr.Donna Rogers, Interim PrincipalVice Principal & Academic Dean: Dr. Donna Rogers

Dr. Rogers joined the Brescia community in July 2013, and currently serves as Vice-Principal and Academic Dean. Her areas of responsibility include: the academic functions of the University and for Library Services.

Dr. Rogers holds an Honors BA in Latin and Spanish from the University of Waterloo, an MA in Spanish from Western University, and a Ph.D. in Hispanic Languages and Literatures from the University of Toronto. Prior to joining Brescia faculty, Dr. Rogers taught in undergraduate and graduate programs at Pennsylvania State University, Queen’s University, Middlebury College, and Dalhousie University. Her current research project is focussed on Spanish and Catalan-language manuscripts in the collection of the Hispanic Society of America.


Marianne SimmVice-Principal, Students: Marianne Simm

Marianne has been a member of the Brescia community since 1997. Her areas of responsibility include: Recruitment; Admissions; Student Affairs; Residence; and Campus Ministry. Marianne holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Queen’s University and an MBA in Educational Administration from Royal Roads University. Prior to joining Brescia, Marianne held a number of student facing and leadership positions within the Faculty of Arts and Science at Queen’s University. Her career began at Brescia in student recruitment, with a subsequent appointment to Registrar in 2003. Marianne is committed to supporting student success within her current portfolio, which encompasses all stages of the student life cycle.


Amy WalbyVice-Principal, Finance & Administration: Amy Walby

Amy was hired at Brescia in February 2011. Her responsibilities as
Vice-Principal, Finance & Administration include: Financial Services; Human Resources; Strategic and Institutional Planning; and Facilities Management. Amy holds an Honours BA and a Master’s of Accounting from the University of Waterloo,and is a professionally- designated Chartered Accountant (CPA, CA) and Chartered Business Valuator (CBV). Amy worked for a national accounting firm for over 15 years in Toronto and London, Ontario before joining Brescia, specializing in transaction advisory services and business valuations.

Joining Brescia in February 2015, Cathy Vitkauskas has responsibility for development, alumnae relations, and communications. Cathy, who holds an undergraduate degree in public administration and public policy from King’s University College at Western, spent 16 years at the Ivey Business School, most recently serving as their Director Annual Giving and Donor Relations. As a member of the Ivey Advancement leadership team, she gained extensive volunteer management experience, partnering with senior fundraising volunteers and Advisory Board members. Her broad-based and disciplined approach to development will enhance the fundraising, stewardship, alumnae relations, marketing, and communications operations at Brescia, where her work will focus on all of these strategic areas.
